Hi,

I don't have an exact date yet, but sometime in November.

We're adding a lot of new functionality to this release and have decided not to release it as freeware. We expect to charge both commercial an non-commercial users aprox $40 per license.

However, because so many people have given us suggestions and ideas for the new release we'd like to offer them a free license for the new version in exchange for beta testing.

We will send you an advanced copy of the new version of ColorCache for you to evaluate (early November).  When the new version of ColorCache is released later in the month we'll provide you with a free license key.

If you're interested in becoming a beta tester for ColorCache v3.0 please email me: swestlake@tlhouse.co.uk (I'll try and contact everyone that's contacted us with ideas, but get in touch with me just in case).

(We only need a limited number of beta testers, and priority will be given to those that have provided input for the new version of ColorCache.)

Firstly, there is no way for us to distinguish between commercial and non-commercial users. We suspect that there are a lot of commercial users of ColorCache, but only a handful have purchased licenses. Based upon this, I think it's likely that if we introduced a two-tier price structure we'd only sell non-commercial licences.

In addition, I suspect many commercial users of ColorCache are small, one-man businesses that are struggling to make ends meet. They are often less able to afford software than non-commercial users.

We were happy to give early versions of ColorCache away as we'd developed it for our own use. We've since put a lot of work into developing v3.0 to meet customer demand and need to start seeing a return on that investment. We simply wouldn't feel comfortable about overcharging commercial users in order to subsidise non-commercial users.

The price we are asking for ColorCache v3.0 (which incidentally is $34.99) is very reasonable.

as you say this program is a bit web-centric but...

i bought this this program to generate color scheme palettes to 'paint' virtual houses on a virtual site.
i use it with Paint Shop Pro (old version Cool so please dont 'drop' the PAL palette.

i showed it to my sister who knows zero about computers/the web and she immediately started trying to
generate colors to decorate her (real) house. she fiddled for ages and eventualy printed them out, she'll probably go down the shops now and try to find the matching paint!! maybe you can get dulux to sponsor you, link to their site to buy paints!!

also her hobby is (real)painting so she was trying to generate colors for this too, but they seem to use a subtractive RYB color model and i dont know if this translates easily or at all. RGB->RYB ?? dont know.

i also do a bit of web-site design so i use it for that too, but i bought it more for the above reasons.

this is a very good program, and i (and my sister) enjoy using it. thankyou very much. oh, one thing.
we built up a palette (for my sister living room), then she said: is there any way to find out if this color
goes with what we've already got? interesting question. no idea how you would implement that.
maybe:-
1. you have made a palette and it is selected.
2. in the palette builder, you select option to match current palette
3. you select a colour
4. you show the closest match of that color to current palette, and allow add
dont know. may complicate things too much. just an idea.
anyway my sister wants a computer now just so she can get this program to play with.
