I have been searching for something like for a LONG time..

After an hour, here's what I have come up with..

Hitting "tab" doesn't cycle through all the possibilities.  Once it locks onto one possibility, you can't tab to any other choices.   It also seems to select the wrong one first.  (I use "gvim" as  a text editor".. when you save a file it makes a backup file with a tilde trailing the extension).

When I hit the tab to complete a filename that has a backup file along side, causes it to grab hold of the backup file and not let go.

Tab completion with directores with quotes also has problems.  Say, I hit "c:\pro" and hit tab.. It adds a double quote at the beginning, and fills out literally....

c:>"c:\Program Files"

In a normal dos prompt, I'll just hit a back slash, and start typing the next directory and hit tab again.. This doesn't work in promptpal

....

Why doesn't ctrl-c work!?  I see we have abort, but why can't we bind ctrl-c to it?

I agreed with another post, that suggested "alt-left/right" ... ctrl-f6 is a little much, I can't even reach that combo with one hand..

That's about it for now..

Awesome app, just needs a few minor tweaks, and you got my $30!

Cheers,

Gah, more problems..

1. The tabs don't flash when something changes while another tab is displayed (good for when you're logging multiple things at a time)
2. "tail -f" doesn't work very well.  If I run tail from a normal dos prompt, and another from within promptpal, the dos prompt shows data in the log immediately, while promptpal takes MUCH longer to display the new data (if it even does it at all)..

Sad

I guess I'll just use XTAIL instead of promptpal for logging..

Hi dextius, thanks for writing in.

Taking your points in turn:

1) Currently, as you've noted, PromptPal just takes the first match when you hit tab for path completion. This is something we may change in a later release, though many people prefer to use the drop-down list rather than the tab method.

2) CTRL-C is the traditional command prompt abort hotkey, but crucially it's also the Windows standard shortcut for "copy to clipboard". As PromptPal is first and foremost a Windows application, we had to support the standard Windows editing shortcuts. In a future release, we may allow customization so that non-standard assignments can be used.

3) Tab switching with CTRL-F6: again, this is the Windows standard for a multi-document interface, however we'll add an alternative in a future release.

4) Tab flashing - a nice idea. We'll add it as an option in a later release

5) Problems with "tail". Could you tell me which implementation of tail you're using? It's likely that it is tied very closely to the console window and therefore won't accept PromptPal's attempt to redirect its output to the current pane. There may be an implementation of tail by a different vendor that is more compatible, or you could define the "tail" command within PromptPal and change its launch type (much like telnet)

Cheers!

Thank you for your prompt reply.

1. All I am asking is that you model the functionality that the Command Tool provides already, so the transition doesn't force me to accept a loss in functionality.
2. Ouch.  I run my command tools in "quick insert" mode.. Right click "copies", but you have an elaborate menu system.  I guess it comes down to what people are more comfortable with, or what they use more.  Again, if you provide this as an option, I would appreciate it.
3. Firefox supports the changing of tabs is control-shift-tab.  I have an extension that lets me override it. (SwiftTabs).  Again, I just something painless, using keys my fingers are used to using...
4. Yeah, instant messagers, like trillian support this..
5. I'm using this one.. http://unxutils.sourceforge.net/  ...  Hrm, I see what you mean about telnet, I use an ssh client that runs out of the command tool, and it doesn't work either..   Soo, any interactive command tool program has to be run out of a command tool that you spawn out of promptpal? (kind of defeating the purpose of having tabs, right?)

Also, I can't pipe to more, I can't "dir /p" anymore.. Is this a configuration option?

Yes - I completely understand where you're coming from. I think with the command prompt perhaps more than other tools/apps, everyone has their own way of working. We'll definitely be adding more customization options to PromptPal during the year.

Regarding "dir /p", piping to "more" - in the dir case, I think the tool sees that its output is being redirected so it doesn't wait. In the case of the pipe to more, I guess it's actively watching the console for a key press (like telnet again).

We will however be adding a kind of scroll-locking feature to the next release - so that if activated, new output won't automatically scroll the pane to the bottom. This should fulfill basically the same function.

If this is something that is going to prove popular than I think it will almost certainly appear in a forthcoming release (as a configuration option).

We normally make maintenance releases every 4 - 6 weeks, so hopefully we'll have something available soon.

Sweet.

1. add control-c binding.
2. fix the tab completion (so it acts like command tool)
3. fix interactive applications, like ssh, telnet and ftp
4. fix paging issues ("dir /p", tail -f)
5. Look into getting "flashing tabs" when new data is received..

Take care of these and you got my $30, and probably 2 or 3 other people in my office..

I think number 3 is out of the question - as far a I know interactive applications insist on direct communication with the console. But we always review these things on a regular basis so if it ever appears possible we'd certainly be keen to do it!
