Let me start off by saying PromptPal is a fine piece of software.

Thank you - much appreciated!

I'm from the unix world, but have to do a lot of development on windows machines at the moment. A couple of questions/suggestions:

1) Is PromptPal actually still under development?

It's on hold at the moment, but there's a long list of improvements we want to make when a good long development window opens up.

2) Could there be an option to disallow the cursor to be placed anywhere but the current command prompt? It is kinda odd that a selection also places the cursor somewhere on the screen, where I can't type anyway.

Yep that could certainly be added.

3) Could there be an option to re-assign keyboard shortcuts? Specifically I'm thinking about switching tabs. I'm often heavily switching between tabs and ctrl+f6 seems unnatural, I'd prefer something like "alt+left" or "alt+right" to switch to the left and right tab, respectively.

Try File -> Set Command Shortcuts, I think that'll do what you're wanting.

4) What about PowerShell/64bit support? The respective forum posts are from 2007~2008?....

Absolutely - these are things we definitely want to add. Some work on a 64 bit version was done, but was shelved because at the time 64-bit Windows wasn't very common. That's changing now of course thanks in part to Windows 7.

5) An option to tell New Tab (Ctrl + T) to open a new tab at the "same" location as the one, that's currently active.

Again a good suggestion, one that I'd very much like to see myself.

I would hope that we can get the development time we need later this year, it just depends on how much time gets taken by our other products.

And another suggestion:

An option to tell New Tab (Ctrl + T) to open a new tab at the "same" location as the one, that's currently active.

That's about it. Last but not least, I'm not only evaluating PromptPal for myself, but hope to get some of my colleagues to use it as well. Thanks for your time!

Thanks, I'll see if I can figure out what is breaking those API calls.

Yep: WNetOpenEnum, WNetEnumResource etc

Do you know which specific API it uses so I can check to see what may be interfering with it?  Perhaps it is a Group Policy setting since I'm running this on an Active Directory domain?

Thanks,
Matt

It uses the Windows network enumeration APIs, and does not do any AD-specific stuff.

Thanks for the reply.  It is possible the Helpdesk e-mail was caught in my junk filter as well.

At any rate, what does "old-style" network discovery mean?  Is it directly querying the AD database via WMI or dsquery methods?  There are no firewalls (hardware or software) involved - so that should not be the problem.  I understand how to add computers to a feed using a csv format.  But what if I need to periodically update feeds or create new feeds with new machines added to the domain that I do not specifically know about, or do not know the hostname for?

I'm just trying to figure out why the network discovery works on some AD domains, but not others.

Thanks,
Matt

Hi,

Sorry you didn't receive the HelpDesk reply - it may have been swallowed by an over-zealous mail filter. You can retrieve it via the name and password sent when you first submitted the query, but for convenience I'll repeat it here:

[snip]
LogMeister uses old-style network discovery methods to locate other machines, and may be blocked from seeing those machines by firewalls etc. Each machine can be added manually via the UI, but if you're creating a large number of feeds you can list them all in a csv (comma separated values file) and submit that to LogMeister. For more details about this method, please check the following topic in the Help:

Working with Feeds -> Create Eventlog feeds from csv

That gives you the csv format to use. Once you've created the feeds, you can tweak values by editing one feed and using "Copy properties To" to propagate the changes to all other compatible feeds.
[/snip]

Hope this helps!

Hi,

I sent a question into the helpdesk on this a few days ago, but haven't received a reply yet.  I was wondering what mechanism LogMeister (ver 3.0.7.0) uses to populate it's list of Network Computers when running the Windows Event Log Wizard.  The reason I ask, is because on some of my Windows AD domains, this wizard works and auto-populates the list of domain computers, on other AD domains, this feature does not work.  Then I have to manually enter the computer names.  In each instance, I am using a domain administrator account to run LogMeister service, and the same account to run the application.  But I'm not certain why the wizard would work on some domains, and not others.

Any suggestions are appreciated,

Thanks,
Matt
