Architecture

There are two components to LogMeister log reader products:

1. The application front end which is used for configuration purposes and for log viewing and analysis.
   
2. The (optional) service component that runs in the background and monitors your network's logs even when no one is logged onto the host computer.

As LogMeister log reader is a centralized monitoring solution there is no need to install agents on monitored PC's and servers. This results in lower maintenance, reduced license fees (monitor as many servers and logs as you like without the need to purchase additional licenses) and a more secure system as there are no remote agents that can be tampered with.

Log Monitoring & Notification

LogMeister log reader gathers information from logs throughout your network either in real-time, or according to a specified schedule.

New data arriving from the source logs can optionally be copied into LogMeister's private store on your hard disk (in binary format) for viewing and analysis. If you wish, you can set a limit on the store size - when the limit is reached, the oldest items are automatically removed to make room for new ones. LogMeister can be configured to automatically archive data when an internal store reaches capacity.

You can filter data as it is read from the source, thus filtering out 'noise' events and restricting the items that are written to LogMeister's store.

Finally, you can tell LogMeister to watch incoming data for certain criteria and take appropriate action, such as issuing an onscreen alert, sending an email, running a script or generating a separate log (see Event Notification below). You can specify complex match criteria, and can even specify trigger thresholds and frequency of alerts based upon prior events.

Monitored logs (or feeds) can be sorted into groups for easy management. You can setup monitoring and notification on all logs on your network in one single step using LogMeister's powerful configuration wizards.

Supported Event Notification Types

The following notification types are supported:

• Alert people by email (with optional attachments);
• Send SMS or pager alerts via an email-to-SMS gateway;
• Run a script, command line or application;
• Write out entries to a log;
• Create and email a report.
• Display a popup (when front end is running only)
• Play a sound (when front end is running only)

Event Log Reading & Analysis

The data for each log that you monitor can be viewed in the LogMeister's built in Log Viewer. You can merge data from multiple logs, filter, sort and reorganize columns, and create multiple views of the same data. At the click of a button you can export a view in various formats including text, csv, xml, formatted HTML reports and RSS feeds, making it easy to distribute data, and import it into a wide variety of third party databases and analysis tools.

The LogMeister Log Viewer

The LogMeister viewer presents gathered log data in a consistent, easy to read format. Monitored logs can be sorted into groups for easy management - simply select a log from a list to display it's data, and then apply a variety of merges, filters, sorts, and transformations to help you pinpoint items of interest. You can create aggregate feeds (data merged from multiple logs) to assist with timeline analysis across networked computers.

Satellite Windows

Satellite Windows allow you to keep a view of one or more logs on display whilst the main application window is minimized or displaying another log. This allows you to view multiple logs simultaneously or use a variety of filters and sorts to create different views of the same data.

Once a satellite window has been created (and is therefore visible within the Window Manager dialog), it will be automatically opened every time you launch LogMeister. You can of course delete a satellite window at any time, or simply hide and show the window if you want to preserve window properties and positioning.

Reports, Archiving, Data Export and Data Conversion

LogMeister log reader can output processed or raw log data from your entire network in a variety of formats (text, csv, xml, formatted HTML reports and RSS feeds) according to various triggers:

• On demand According to a specified schedule
• When an internal data store reaches a specified capacity
• In response to a specific event occurring in a log

This makes it easy to distribute information, create reports or import data into a database or into analysis applications such as Excel or Crystal Reports. You can even publish your logs as live RSS feeds.

Scalability & Performance

A single installation of LogMeister log reader can be used to monitor as many logs, PC's and servers as your system and network resources allow. There is no need to install agents on monitored PC's, or to purchase additional licenses.
